            | Biosciences, College of Life & Environmental Sciences Biosciences, College of Life & Environmental Sciences3-year Postdoctoral Research Position in Fish Physiology and Aquaculture (Ref: P44287)
The College wishes to recruit an Associate Research Fellow to participate in an integrative physiology project to fully understand the acid-base responses to meal digestion and improve the efficiency and sustainability of aquaculture fish production. This 3-year BSBRC funded post is an Industrial Partnership Award (IPA) with Skretting, the largest global producer of fish feed, available to start ideally by January 2013. The successful applicant will: Assess how various endogenous and exogenous factors (e.g. meal size, temperature and water chemistry) affect the post-meal alkaline tide in fish and the associated physiological consequences for acid-base balance, blood O2 transport, metabolism etc., 2) determine the localisation and quantification of genes and proteins related to acid-base and ion transport in a range of tissues following feeding, and 3) establish the energetic costs associated with meal digestion and explore how these can be experimentally and commercially manipulated to improve the efficiency of food conversion into growth in salmonids.
Applicants will possess a relevant PhD, be a nationally recognised authority in fish physiology and possess sufficient specialist knowledge in the discipline to develop research programmes and methodologies. The successful applicant will also be able to work collaboratively, supervise the work of others and act as team leader as required. Applicants will ideally be able to carry out  in vivo physiology experiments with salmonid fish (including cannulation techniques, blood gas and acid-base analysis, automated respirometry and use of radio-isotopic tracers), as well as molecular techniques such as qPCR, Western blotting and immunohistochemistry. Some experience within the aquaculture industry would also be of value.
